Fidgets: A Proactive Tool for Sensory Integration

Fidgeting is often an adaptive strategy used by the brain to stay alert or calm down. When used intentionally, sensory fidgets are a legitimate tool for sensory integration. They assist with:

  • Self-Regulation: Providing "heavy work" or rhythmic tactile input to help de-escalate anxiety.
  • Focus & Concentration: Helping the brain maintain attention during long listening tasks or independent work.
  • Reduced Sensory Seeking: Providing a safe, socially-appropriate outlet for tactile sensory needs, preventing disruptive behaviors.
  • Fine Motor Skill Development: Items like tangles and modular pens help build finger strength, coordination, and pincer grasp.

Top Tip: We recommend a "fidget menu." Offer a participant 3 different types (e.g., one visual, one tactile, one heavy-work) to see which one best supports their specific regulation goals.
